What's Super Zero?
A neighborhood game about reducing waste
Super Zero is a community game in a box, that focuses on reducing waste at home. Neighborhoods are encouraged to come together to be the heroes that waste less and save the world. Super Zero focusses on small efforts that make a difference towards reversing the global climate crisis. This gives children the opportunity to head their family’s journey towards zero waste.
When arriving at a Super Zero event, families explore a house made entirely out of cardboard, learning something different in each room. Mini games and activities include, recycling basketball, diy compost bin crafting, and food matching games. These games will touch on the topics of recycling contamination, single use plastics and even how our trash affects sea turtles!

Research
I utilized the human-centered design process to gain empathy with suburban families and their experiences recycling and reducing waste at home. Through user interviews and surveys, I was able to gain insight into the various perspectives that can be believed under one household. By understanding the user's journey when recycling, cooking, composting, and creating waste, I was able to discover a large gab in knowledge about recycling requirements and food preservation.

the goal
After conducting user research, I developed the How Might We statement: HMW give children agency in the zero waste initiatives. Through ideation, Super Zero was born. The goal of the experience is to educate neighborhoods on their zero waste initiatives in a fun experience for the entire family. Through usability testing, I discovered this to be an effective way to give children agency to keep their grown-ups accountable for their involvement in the global climate crisis.
Project
Inspiration
My inspiration for this project was my own family and their assumptions around recycling and composting. Each person in my household (there's 6 of us) has a completely different perspective on our zero waste practices. One person tries to recycle every piece of plastic including blenders, and another person doesn't see why we need sea turtles and loves plastic straws! This led me to create Super Zero so the entire family can learn about how they can contribute to wasting less and recycling correctly.
